The POW/MIA Memorial Committee of the Veterans Museum and Parks Committee, Inc. of Hillsborough County will commemorate National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, and dedicate Florida’s newest Prisoner Of War/Missing In Action Memorial on Saturday, April 9. The ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. 301 N. in Tampa, at 11 a.m.
Former Prisoners of War and Family representatives of our Missing in Action from the Greater Tampa Bay region will be recognized during the event. The public is invited to attend
The program opens with music by the 13th Army Band of the Florida Air National Guard, the National Anthem will be sung by Teresa Foss, followed by a Cobra Gunship flyover.
The program will feature Hillsborough County Commission Chairman Lesley “Les” Miller, Jr.; Lt. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, USA, Retired, Director, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency; Bill Norwood, former Korean War Prisoner of War; and Pam Cain, Board of Directors, National League of POW/MIA Families.
The ceremony will include proclamations from Gov. Rick Scott, and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. A Roll Call honoring Hillsborough County Prisoners of War and Missing in Action will be conducted by County and military leaders with assistance from Hillsborough County high school JROTC units.
The ceremony will conclude with the dedication and ribbon-cutting, followed by a ceremonial closing. The public is encouraged to visit with former Prisoners of War and Missing in Action Families, and visit the special exhibit of POW/MIA memorabilia at the RADM LeRoy Collins, Jr., Veterans Museum.
