On November 13, 2013 – NDIA sent the following information –

Dear Members and Friends of NDIA and its affiliates:
We at NDIA continue to encourage our political leaders and the ongoing House-Senate Budget Conference Committee to replace sequestration with a substitute deficit reduction measure. Last week, NDIA led a coalition of defense associations in a letter to the Joint Chiefs of Staff urging them to tell Congress what it will mean for our military if sequestration remains in place. This morning we will further that effort with testimony before the Defense Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

While NDIA continues to push for an end to sequestration, we firmly believe that your voices are most influential in persuading your Members of Congress to find deficit-neutral alternatives to sequestration. Before taking any vote on defense sequestration, every Member of Congress should understand the impact sequestration has had on military readiness. To that end, NDIA led another letter yesterday asking Members of Congress to attend a briefing detailing the impact of sequestration on readiness. The classified, Members-only briefing, hosted by the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, will take place this Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. in 2118 Rayburn House Office Building.

If you agree that sequestration is seriously harming national security, we encourage you to ask your Members of Congress to attend this classified briefing. No Member of Congress should cast a vote to preserve sequestration without a clear understanding of how sequestration has impacted readiness. Even if your senators or representative cannot attend this specific briefing, they can request the information from the Pentagon or their chamber’s Armed Services Committee or a similar briefing at a more convenient time or place. If you would like your Members of Congress to attend this briefing or obtain the same information through other channels, here is what you can do:

– Call the staff of your Senators and Representative to ask your legislators to attend. Given the urgency of a request to attend a briefing scheduled this Thursday, a call to staff will deliver the message in the most timely fashion. Even if your member cannot attend this specific briefing, you can urge their staff to obtain the information in written form or request a follow-up briefing on the same subject. Use the ZIP Code tool in the upper right hand corner of the House of Representatives website to identify your Congressman and the state tool on the Senate website to identify your Senators, call the main office number, and ask to speak with the staffer who handles national security or military issues.

– Write an email to your Senators and Representative asking them to attend. The contact pages of your legislators will have a form-fillable email you can send to make your request. However, your Member of Congress is unlikely to see this request soon enough to take action before Thursday.

NDIA will continue to find ways to give collective voice to the needs of defense industry as the Budget Conference Committee deliberates on the fiscal challenges facing our country.
